Australians Urged To Remain Calm But Cautious
There have been a number or security incidents around the country today involving packages or letters which have been suspected of containing hazardous material.
Most of today's incidents have already proved to be false alarms. In other cases, precautionary measures have been taken and investigations are still proceeding.
The relevant security and emergency services in each State have treated these incidents seriously and have taken appropriate action. The response of all authorities appears to have been swift, coordinated and comprehensive.
At the moment, there is no specific threat of terrorism in Australia. However, Australia remains on a heightened security alert. Given the experiences in the United States and the uncertainty of the international environment it is important for Australian authorities to remain vigilant against any potential biological threat.
The safety and security of all Australians is our highest priority. Commonwealth health, law enforcement and security and intelligence agencies will continue to work with the States and Territories to ensure reports of suspicious material or activities are dealt with in an appropriate manner.
The Protective Security Coordination Centre, part of the attorney-General's Department, issued advice today to Commonwealth Departments and agencies on how to deal with suspicious packages.
The Commonwealth has also developed guidelines to assist people and businesses that may be concerned about handling mail items. These guidelines provide information on how mail should be handled and what to do if a suspicious mail item or package is identified.
Australia is well prepared for an incident involving biological or chemical gents in the unlikely event such should occur. The health systems preparedness was greatly increased as part of the lead-up to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
